FORTERESSE DU VIEUX CHATEL-SUR-MOSELLE
8 rue des Capucins 88330 Châtel-sur-Moselle
Come to the fortress of Châtel, you will be welcomed at the Guyot d'Avilley center, built on the gatehouse of a fortress charged with five centuries of history.
If you wish, a guided tour of the site can be organized upon reservation in advance. The guide will lead you through the maze of underground rooms and galleries on a fortified site whose remains cover five hectares. A model presented in the museum will show you the original state of this unique monument in Lorraine and you will plunge into the universe of the Middle Ages.
The history of the site begins at the end of the 11th century with the construction of a square keep and continues with the construction of an enclosure allowing flanking fire with bows and crossbows. With the arrival in the 15th century of artillery with stone and metal balls, the castle became a real fortress. It has two superimposed enclosures to the north protected by a wide moat and to the south by a shield wall enclosing the original enclosure bathed by the Moselle.
You will also discover the collection of cannonballs and the fire stick, ancestor of the arquebus. While walking through the site, you will visit among others the location of the drawbridge, a tower of the gatehouse, the guards' room, the arsenal.
Numerous animations are proposed on the site during the year, in particular evenings of night in summer as well as training courses or building sites of initiation.

The site is open all year round from 9am to 5pm.
